Abstract
This collection consists of 2 boxes of the papers of the Indian Industries League, 1893-1922.
Collection Description
This collection consists of the papers, records, and annual reports (1900-1902, 1904-1911) of the Indian Industries League of Boston, Mass., which sought to support and stimulate industries on reservations, enabling Native Americans to become self-supporting. Minutes, most of which were kept by Frances Sparhawk, reflect the League's involvement with other organizations and with various members of the Board of Indian Commissioners and also contain reports from field workers who facilitated Native American industries, especially work with the Acoma (pottery), Arapaho (beadwork), Cheyenne (beadwork), Laguna (pottery), Navajo (rugs, silverworking), Oneida (lace-making), Pima (basket-making), and Pueblo (pottery and textiles).
Minutes also describe agriculture; economic, health, and social conditions; government relations; and the work of Kate Barnard in recovering Oklahoma lands taken illegally from Oklahoma Native Americans. The collection contains reports from archaeologist Warren Moorehead and from League President John Lockwood on his trip to the Mission, Navajo, and Yuma reservations.
